Pay periods in a year
| Period | Paychecks a year | From annual pay |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | 12 | ÷ 12 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | ÷ 24 |
| Biweekly | 26 | ÷ 26 |
| Weekly | 52 | ÷ 52 |
Biweekly vs semi-monthly
Biweekly means every other week (26 paychecks); semi-monthly means twice a month, often the 15th and the last day (24 paychecks). On the same salary, each biweekly check is smaller, but you get two extra checks a year. Months with three biweekly paydays happen twice a year.
Monthly equivalent of biweekly pay = biweekly × 26 ÷ 12
27-paycheck years
Because a year is 52 weeks plus a day or two, every 11 years or so a biweekly schedule has 27 paydays. Salaried employers handle this differently; some divide the salary by 27 that year.
Worked examples
- $4,500 a month is $54,000 a year, $2,076.92 biweekly or $1,038.46 a week.
- $1,800 biweekly is $46,800 a year, or $3,900 a month on average.
- $950 a week is $49,400 a year, or $4,116.67 a month.
Budgeting tip
If you’re paid weekly or biweekly, budget with the monthly average (annual pay ÷ 12), not four paychecks. A month averages 4.33 weeks, so four weekly paychecks undercount your monthly income by about 8%.
Which pay schedule is best?
None pays more over a year; the salary is the same. Weekly and biweekly pay make cash flow smoother for hourly workers, monthly pay is simplest for budgeting fixed bills, and semi-monthly pay lines up with rent and mortgage dates on the 1st and 15th. The schedule mostly changes how big each check is and when it arrives.
Daily pay is usually yearly pay ÷ 260 working days (52 weeks × 5 days), which is how many employers work out pay for a partial week or unpaid leave.
How each pay period is worked out
- Weekly: yearly pay ÷ 52.
- Biweekly: yearly pay ÷ 26. Some years have 27 biweekly paydays, which makes each check smaller if your salary is fixed.
- Semi-monthly: yearly pay ÷ 24, paid on fixed dates such as the 1st and 15th.
- Monthly: yearly pay ÷ 12.
- Hourly: yearly pay ÷ (hours per week × 52).
