How to convert salary to hourly
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
A full-time year is usually 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. So $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
Quick rule of thumb
Divide the salary by 2,000 for a fast estimate: $60,000 → about $30 an hour. The exact figure (÷ 2,080) is a little lower.
Common salaries as hourly pay (40 hours, 52 weeks)
| Salary | Hourly | Monthly | Biweekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $19.23 | $3,333 | $1,538 |
| $50,000 | $24.04 | $4,167 | $1,923 |
| $60,000 | $28.85 | $5,000 | $2,308 |
| $75,000 | $36.06 | $6,250 | $2,885 |
| $100,000 | $48.08 | $8,333 | $3,846 |
When the simple formula misleads
- Long weeks. If you regularly work 50 hours on salary, your real hourly rate is lower; set hours per week to 50.
- Unpaid time off. If you are paid for fewer than 52 weeks, lower the weeks.
- Before tax. All figures are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.
Salaried vs hourly: what the hourly number misses
Two jobs with the same hourly equivalent can be worth very different amounts. When you compare a salary with an hourly offer, also compare:
- Overtime. Hourly (non-exempt) workers earn 1.5× after 40 hours; many salaried (exempt) workers don’t.
- Paid time off and holidays. A salary usually includes them; hourly pay often stops when you don’t work.
- Benefits. Employer health insurance and 401(k) matching can be worth 20–30% of pay.

Salary to hourly for part-time and four-day weeks
Change the hours to match your schedule. A $52,000 salary over a four-day, 32-hour week is $52,000 ÷ (32 × 52) = $31.25 an hour, compared with $25 at 40 hours. If you are paid for only 48 weeks because of unpaid leave, set weeks to 48: $52,000 ÷ (40 × 48) = $27.08.
Hourly rate after tax
The hourly figure here is before tax. To see what an hour of work actually puts in your pocket, run your salary through the take-home pay calculator and divide the yearly take-home by the same number of hours. At $60,000 in a state with no income tax that is about $24.23 an hour after federal tax, Social Security and Medicare.
